1. Telcos' metro play needs 3G edge: Analysts: MUMBAI: Telecom
revenue from existing services in metro circles is reaching saturation, and a
boost in topline will only come about when operators improve service quality and
enhance data usage experience for customers, analysts say. The latest data collated
by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for the June quarter, shows
that the overall revenue in metro circles fell 0.2%, owing to an 8% fall in Mumbai,
from the preceding quarter. Revenues in the so-called ‘A’ circles
grew merely 3.6%. Metro circles such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata account for
16% of the sectors’ total revenue, while ‘A’ accounts for 39%.

2. DoT may give exit route to new telecom operators: NEW DELHI: Telecom
Commission, the decision making arm of Telecom Ministry, will soon decide whether
to allow new operators to surrender 2G spectrum and avail of refund of the money
they paid in January 2008. A senior official in the Telecom Ministry said the
government is considering an exit option for the new telecom players who are struggling
to roll out services.

4. Huawei bags Tata Tele's 3G gear deal: Chinese equipment vendor
has bagged a multi-million dollar deal from Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL) for the
supply of equipment for third generation (3G) services.This is the second 3G gear
deal in India for Huawei after it bagged a contract from Reliance Communications.TTSL,
which recently acquired the spectrum for nine circles for rolling out 3G services,
has selected Huawei to roll out network in five circles. The contract for the
other four circles has already been given to Nokia Siemens.Mr A.G. Rao, Chief
Technology Officer and President - Enterprise Business, Tata Teleservices, said:
“The company will provide superior 3G technology and services to all our
esteemed consumers, and to this end, we are getting the latest LTE-ready technology
from our technology partner, Huawei.”

5. Airtel plans app store for fixed-line broadband users: Fixed-line
telephone users will soon have access to all the interesting applications available
to mobile subscribers. In a bid to drive revenue from data services on its fixed-line
network, Bharti Airtel is working on an application store for its broadband subscribers.
The company currently has 3.1 million fixed-line telephone subscribers, of which
1.3 million have broadband connection.Mr K Srinivas, President, Telemedia Services,
Bharti Airtel, told Business Line, “The application store is absolutely
relevant for fixed line, just as it is for cellular users. Within the next 6-12
months, we are working on moving a dumb pipe to an enriched pipe. For this, we
will work with partners and content owners.”
